Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away following a brutal attack by her former boyfriend. Born on February 22, 1991, Cheptegei was a celebrated figure in athletics, known for her impressive achievements on the track. However, her life was cut short under horrifying circumstances.

On September 1, 2024, Cheptegei was assaulted by her ex-partner, Dickson Ndiema, at her residence in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. Ndiema, reportedly after an argument, doused her with petrol and set her on fire. The horrific act left Cheptegei with severe burns covering 75% of her body. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

In a tragic twist, Ndiema was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the attack. Despite the medical attention she received, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries on September 5, 2024.

The incident has shocked and saddened the sports community and beyond, raising serious concerns about domestic violence and the safety of individuals in such situations.
