Mya is opening up about her seven-year celibacy journey and how it changed her life. The R&B singer recently shared her experience on the 'Way Up With Angela Yee' show.

During her appearance on Angela Yee's show on July 25, Mya, now 44, revealed that she practiced celibacy for seven years. She said this discipline brought her more "mental clarity."

"Just doing without shifted my mindset," Mýa explained. "It was no longer a focus. The rush to be in a relationship, to be married, to have kids—there's a lot of pressure on women to do that."

The "Worth It" singer emphasized the importance of self-love and how beautiful it is to embrace it. "Love is beautiful, and I think the world always needs more of it, but I think you must start with yourself," she said. "I have to start with self always, versus expecting from other sources."

Mýa added that her celibacy was a necessary spiritual practice. "I think it's something that was necessary because it's a very spiritual thing. And you must be very selective if you want better results. That self-accountability started with me by shutting that part of my life off."

She hinted that her decision to practice celibacy was influenced by the "semi-sex symbol" label she got early in her career. This label made her choose a more private life. "There's a lot of things that are said about you, and you take all of that in at an early age," she said. "The way you look might not match who you really are, and it affects your life when you're trying to date or maybe taking photos with other celebrities."

Mýa believes that some things should remain private. "For me, things should stay private until I'm sure and ready, and even then it's a risk. So I don't really share that part of my life publicly," she concluded.
