In a heartfelt tribute posted on Instagram, Shannon shared a touching video of her and her father dancing to Luther Vandross' “Dance with My Father,” expressing her deep loss. Shannon captioned '' I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st.
We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.
This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.
Amos' family had previously faced disagreements regarding his care, which gained public attention last year. Shannon had raised concerns about potential elder abuse and financial exploitation, even involving law enforcement.
Despite this, John Amos, who was hospitalized at the time, released a statement through his publicist asserting that he was doing well.
On June 8th 2023, John Amos' daughter Shannon Amos posted on her Instagram account ''November, my dad and I created a cherished video together. Little did we know the challenges that lay ahead. On May 14th, I would receive a distressing call: from my dad, sharing that he was hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, in immense pain.
Despite being out of the country, I arranged for help to reach him. ICU revealed his life hanging by a thread.
The past two weeks shattered our world. My dad, a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation. We are collaborating with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and local authorities, determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. Legal assistance is crucial to ensure their prosecution and protect my father's future. His home, stripped bare, necessitates a safe space for his return.
This cruel reality bewilders us, but we hold onto hope. Every donation will be directed to a trust for my dad's care, legal fees, and aftercare. John Amos, best known for his roles in Good Times, Roots, and Coming to America, was born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, He grew up in East Orange and graduated from East Orange High School in 1958.
John Allen Amos passed away at the age of 84. His son, Kelly Christopher "K.C." Amos, announced his death that the Emmy-nominated actor died of natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21, 2024.
