Black Panther actress Connie Chiume has died

Connie Chiume, the acclaimed South African actress known for her roles in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has passed on.

In addition to her significant contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chiume was a prominent figure in South African television and also appeared in Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film, Black Is King.

The Chiume family announced her passing through a statement on Instagram: “It is with deep sorrow that the Chiume Family announces the death of the internationally acclaimed actress Connie Chiume.

Connie Chiume, 72, passed away at Garden City Hospital on 6 August 2024. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time, and will share further details as they become available.”

Born on 5th June 1952 in Welkom, South Africa, Chiume had a distinguished career as both an actress and filmmaker.

Her film credits include Blessers and Black Is King, while her television roles encompassed popular series such as Yizo Yizo 2, Zone 14, Rhythm City, and Gomora.

Chiume’s early years were spent in Welkom. Her father, Wright Tadeyo Chiume, was from Usisya, Nkhata Bay in Malawi, and her mother, MaNdlovu, was from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She graduated with a teaching degree in 1976 and began her career in theater, with notable roles in Porgy and Bess, Ipi Ntombi, and Little Shop of Horrors.

Her career flourished with roles in Inkom’ Edla Yodwa (1989) and Warriors from Hell (1990). In 2000, she received the Best Actress in a Drama Series award at the South African Film and Television Awards.

She also had notable stage roles in productions such as You Strike The Woman and You Strike The Rock.

Chiume gained further recognition for her portrayal of Stella Moloi in Zone 14 (2007-2015), which earned her another SAFTA.

She also appeared in Rhythm City and had a memorable role as the Mining Tribe Elder in Black Panther (2018). Her performance in Gomora as Mam'Sonto Molefe and her appearance in Black Is King in 2020 were widely acclaimed.

Chiume was married from 1985 to 2004 and was the mother of four children—two sons and two daughters.

She passed away at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, leaving behind a legacy of influential work and a lasting impact on the South African entertainment industry.
