He was pulled from the water by bystanders, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The official cause of death was confirmed as asphyxia by submersion.
Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Malcolm-Jamal Warner was named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. He showed an early interest in performing at 8 years, eventually attending The Professional Children’s School in New York.
Warner skyrocketed to fame in 1984 when he was cast as Theo Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby's character on The Cosby Show. The role made him a household name and earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986.
He continued his television success as Malcolm McGee on Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000) and later starred as Dr. Alex Reed in Reed Between the Lines (2011, 2015), opposite Tracee Ellis Ross. More recently, he earned acclaim for his role as Dr. AJ “The Raptor” Austin on the FOX medical drama The Resident.
