Joel Matip will leave Liverpool FC this summer after eight successful seasons. The 32-year-old defender, who joined the club on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in 2016, has decided to start a new chapter in his career once his contract ends.

Matip was one of Jürgen Klopp's first signings, and he quickly became a key player for the team. During his time at Liverpool, Matip made 201 appearances, scored 11 goals, and won seven trophies, including the Champions League and the Premier League.

Klopp praised Matip, saying, "I have rarely seen a player as loved as Joel Matip. He's a fantastic professional, a wonderful footballer, and a great person. We have been lucky to have him with us for so long and wish him well in his next chapter."

Matip played 32 games in his first season, helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League. He continued to be a vital part of the team in the following seasons, forming a strong defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk. His contributions were crucial in memorable matches, such as the 4-0 comeback against Barcelona and the Champions League final win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Although injuries limited his playing time in some seasons, Matip always made a significant impact when fit. In the 2021-22 season, he played 43 games as Liverpool won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup and finished second in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Matip's personality and playing style made him a fan favorite and an important figure in the dressing room. Despite an injury that ended his season early, he reached the milestone of 200 games for Liverpool shortly before.

Klopp summed up Matip's time at Liverpool by highlighting his assist for Divock Origi's goal in the Champions League final as a standout moment. He added, "What a moment. What a player. We wish Joel and his family all the best for the future."

Everyone at the club thanks Joel for his contributions over the past eight years and wishes him and his family the best in their future endeavors.
