Social media personality Dr. Umar Johnson has recently stirred controversy by questioning Vanessa Bryant's commitment to supporting the black community with her late husband Kobe Bryant's fortune.

In a recent appearance on the Joe Budden Podcast, Johnson expressed his concerns, accusing Vanessa of not using the wealth inherited from the basketball legend to benefit the black community.

The tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, in 2020 left Vanessa as the sole inheritor of his estimated $600 million fortune. Earlier this year, she was awarded a $28.85 million settlement after filing a lawsuit against Los Angeles County over unauthorized photos taken at the crash site.

Johnson's criticism centers on Vanessa's alleged failure to allocate Kobe's wealth to initiatives supporting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). He specifically pointed out an initiative with predominantly white colleges, criticizing Vanessa for not choosing an HBCU to benefit from Kobe's legacy.

However, Vanessa's philanthropic efforts paint a different picture. The Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, formerly known as the Mamba Sports Foundation, received a substantial donation of $16 million from Vanessa's settlement. The foundation, established before Kobe and Gianna's tragic deaths, aims to create opportunities in sports for underserved youth.

Additionally, Vanessa continues to oversee the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, emphasizing a sustained commitment to charitable endeavors. The recent partnership with Nike, resulting in the Mamba program, focused on promoting the Mamba brand rather than charitable contributions.

Critics argue that Johnson's accusations may be unfair, given Vanessa's demonstrated commitment to philanthropy. They point out that Johnson's emphasis on the racial aspect of Vanessa's initiatives overlooks the broader impact of her charitable work.

While controversies persist, Vanessa Bryant remains dedicated to preserving Kobe's legacy and contributing to the betterment of underserved communities through her philanthropic endeavors. The upcoming unveiling of a statue honoring Kobe and Gianna outside the Crypto.com Arena on February 8 serves as a testament to their enduring impact on the world of sports.
